What does the ASD assessment involve?

All assessments are conducted by our experienced Clinical Psychologists or Clinical Neuropsychologists and Registrars.

1. Pre-assessment

We ask that you complete a series of questionnaires, including a social history form. We may also ask you to provide us with any relevant reports or documents that might be relevant to your assessment.

2. Diagnostic Assessment

We ask you to come in for a 3-5 hour comprehensive assessment to get some background information about your developmental history, current circumstances, and the difficulties you are currently having. If you are under 18, we require a parent to be included in this process. Depending on the nature of the assessment, an additional 3-5 hr assessment component may be required.

3. Feedback

We will invite you for a 30-60 minute online session to provide feedback from the assessment.

4. Comprehensive Report

We provide you (and referrers) with a comprehensive report outlining the assessment findings, including diagnostic information, treatment recommendations, and a personalised roadmap to help guide you towards improved mental health and resilience.

Is autism assessment covered by Medicare?

If you are 25 years old or younger, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for a diagnostic assessment and treatment of any neurodevelopmental disorders/eligible disabilities of $93.35 for up to 4 services.

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals perceive, process, and interact with the world around them. It's a natural variation in brain development, not a disorder or defect. People with autism often have unique strengths and talents, and their diverse ways of thinking and experiencing the world can be a source of creativity and innovation.

Key characteristics of autism may include:

Differences in communication: This can involve challenges with verbal and nonverbal communication, such as understanding or using language, or difficulties with social interactions.

Repetitive behaviours: Individuals with autism may engage in repetitive behaviours or have a strong preference for routines and sameness.

Sensory sensitivities: They may be overly sensitive or less sensitive to sensory input, such as sounds, touch, or light.

It's important to remember that autistic individuals can vary greatly in their abilities and challenges. Each person is unique, and their experiences with autism are shaped by their individual strengths, interests, and support environment.

Our assessment service for autistic adults is centered on your needs and preferences, fostering a collaborative journey where your comfort and participation are prioritised. Our patient-centered approach values clear communication, understanding your strengths and challenges through meaningful conversations rather than a mere checklist. Contact our friendly patient care team to find out more about the assessment process and how we can help you.
