  • The YSQ-R is a 116-item self-report inventory designed to assess 20 Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) that develop in childhood and shape how individuals perceive themselves, others, and the world. It is based on the research of Yalcin, Marais, Lee, and Correia (2021) and utilizes a Rasch analysis for improved measurement.

There are a couple of ways in which the YSQ-R can be administered and Scored, an Excel Program and an Online Administration and Scoring Program.

    Excel Program:

The Excel program offers an efficient and comprehensive scoring system for the YSQ-R. It considers various response formats, including extreme scores, average scores, and the average of specific response ranges (e.g., 4-6). Additionally, the program generates visual representations of the results, enabling clinicians and patients to identify the most relevant schemas easily.

Online YSQ-R Administration and Scoring Program:

My Colleague Dr. Jason Wessle and I have created a fully automated online version of the YSQ-R that is very simple and efficient to administer. Below are instructions for Clinicians to incorporate this version into their practices. For a tutorial on the computerised version of the YSQ-R, please watch the ‘Updated scoring of the YSQ-R ‘ to the right :)

Note: The YSQ-R is intended for use by qualified mental health professionals. While self-reporting allows for individual exploration of schemas, professional guidance is crucial for interpretation and developing effective treatment plans.

  • The SMI is a 124-item self-report questionnaire designed to assess an individual's tendency to activate specific psychological states called "modes." The inventory helps therapists, and patients understand their emotional patterns and coping mechanisms which can then lead to tailored treatment.

    Excel Program:

The Excel program offers an efficient and comprehensive scoring system for the SMI. It generates visual representations of the results, enabling clinicians and patients to identify the most relevant modes easily. This includes; averages for each mode against normative data, total scores, and the number of 5s and 6s for each mode.

Note: The SMI is intended for use by qualified mental health professionals. While self-reporting allows for individual exploration of schemas, professional guidance is crucial for interpretation and developing effective treatment plans.

  • This guide will help patients and clinicians better understand Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) and Schema Therapy. Patients will gain valuable insights into underlying patterns that may be impacting their well-being, while clinicians will discover a powerful therapeutic approach to help clients achieve lasting change. It has also been updated to include the newly identified EMS of; Emotional Constriction, Fear of Losing Control, Punitiveness to Self, and Punitiveness to Others. I hope you find this resource useful.
